We’ve all been there, haven’t we? That awful first date that we couldn’t wait to get away from. The one that smelled funny, wasn’t as hot as their profile picture lead you to believe, or just couldn’t hold a conversation if he or she tried.
Bad dates are part and parcel of dating life sadly, so there will be times where you wish the ground would open up and swallow you. Luckily, with a contingency plan, you can be free of those bad date vibes in no time at all.
Let CrewDating show you how…
How to Get Out of an Awful First Date
Before you go on the date, make sure that you have told a friend where you are going. You should tell your friend what time you are meeting up, and what the rough plan is for your date.
About 30-60 minutes in (from the time you first meet your date), arrange for a friend to call you to find out how things are going.
At this point, if the date is not going well and you’re pretty sure you won’t have any interest in seeing them again, you can make your excuses and leave. You don’t need to tell him or her that your friend is calling to be your get-out-of-jail-free-card. Just tell them that your friend has called with some bad news, there has been an emergency, and you need to make your apologies and leave.
“I’m sorry, that was my friend on the phone. Her daughter has had a bit of an accident and she has asked me to look after her other kids while she takes her to the hospital. Can we take a rain-check?”
Another great tip you can use is when you first turn up to your date, give it a deadline. If you meet up at say 2pm, tell him that you have things to do around 5/6pm, so therefore you may need to rush off. If you enjoy the date, the things you ‘need to do’ can be rearranged for a later time so you can stay and enjoy yourself, but if you aren’t enjoying it, you at least have an end-time at which you can make your excuses and leave.
You could always fake an email saying that urgent thing you ‘need to do’ is more urgent than you thought too.
“Hey, my friend has just called to remind me I need to feed her dog at about 530pm. She’s at work and I promised her I would give him his medication! I hope that’s OK!”
Again, if you’re getting bad vibes from him or her, explain that you can feel the beginning’s of a headache coming and pretend to run to the bathroom to take some painkillers. Over the next half an hour or so, the headache can get progressively worse until you need to make your excuses and leave.
It works every time!
You see, as much as we want our dating adventures to be glorious, romantic affairs, sometimes things will go very wrong. Sometimes we will be set up with men and women that we would never normally like twice at in the regular, non-dating world. We’ll have dates with people that smell, that have a funny laugh, that eat really loudly…
Try not to get too disheartened and take it as the light-hearted humour it should be. Dating is meant to be fun, so learn to laugh about the bad stuff!
